August Practices
Important Information for Parents and Students

Starting August 2 at 7:00 A.M., the Ray-Pec high School Band will begin practicing for their fall show. It is necessary to start this early in August and that every student enrolled in band for the fall attends. During the week of August 2-6 the band will be learning their music, practicing fundamentals, and learning the marching and movements that will be performed with the music on the field. The better the students learn their music this week and the number of movements that the students learn will help ease the load on the students as school and other activities begin. Section leaders should call incoming freshman to inform them of the upcoming practices.

The practice time for August 2-6 is from 7:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Some new students get scared or apprehensive when they see a 7 hour practice day. The day is broken into segments and time passes quickly. The students will begin practicing outside working on marching fundamentals and learning the marching drill. When the weather is extremely hot, the amount of time spent outside is decreased. Also, frequent water breaks are given. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING WATER BOTTLES WITH THEIR NAMES ON THE BOTTLES; WEAR SUN SCREEN, AND BRING THEIR LUNCH. Sometime around 10:30 or 11:00 A.M. students will be given a lunch break. After lunch, students will work on music and participate in a fun or team building activity. The students will be involved in sectionals and large group music practice until practice ends at 2:00 P.M.

Students who need help with transportation may contact Linda Pierson, Dillon Jarrett, or John Wilson and they will try to help you arrange transportation. This should be the last option but the directors will explore all options to make sure that students can attend practice. The marching drill or movements have been designed with your student participating. The marching drill costs around $3500 to write. If your student does not participate, the drill will not look or work right. Marching Season is one of the most fun times of the year for band students. Your student will make lasting memories and friends from participating in marching band.

Students were given a handout in May with the practices and performance times for the fall. Another handout will be given to the students the week of August 2nd. Also, information is posted on www.raypecband.orgor you may contact the band directors at jwilson@raypec.12.mo.us, djarrett@raypec.k12.mo.usor lpierson@raypec.k12.mo.usListed below are some important reminders for the week of August 2nd.

students should wear sun screen
students should bring water bottles
students should attend all practices
students should adhere to the school dress code
students should wear tennis shoes
students should bring a lunch
students should have a pencil, music, and instrument
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS START PREPARING FOR BEING OUTDOORS. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER, SPEND TIME OUTSIDE, EAT A GOOD BREAKFAST AND WEAR APPROPRIATE COOL SUMMER CLOTHING FOR PRACTICE

A fun activity is to have students dress for practice to a particular theme. The winning section each day gets extra time for lunch the following day.
Monday wear red because the Panther Band is red hot.
Tuesday wear crazy hats or socks
Wednesday your section comes up with a theme.
Thursday wear something representing you favorite sports team
Friday wear Ray-Pec attire.

Also, students who have the opener music memorized by August 6th will have their name entered in a drawing.

Students who have the closer music memorized by August 13th will have their name entered in a drawing.

Students who have perfect attendance and punctuality the week of August 6th will have their name entered in a drawing.

Students are charged band fees which include paying for shoes, gloves, food for all competitions (students DO NOT have to bring money for food on marching band trips), uniform cleaning, and a t-shirt. The good news is that students can raise the money for the band fees from fund raising. The first fund raiser will kick off on August 2nd.

Practice continues August 9th-13th from 6:30-8:30 P.M. The directors will work with students involved in sports that week to eliminate conflicts.

August 13th at 6:00 P.M. is the students’ SHOWCASE AND POT LUCK SUPPER. This is a fun night of eating and the students showing the parents what they have learned. This NIGHT EVEN REQUIRES PARENT PARTICIAPTION.

Band Booster Meeting

Our monthly Band Booster meeting will be held on Monday, March 8, at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Library. There is a lot of upcoming activities to talk about and plan. Please plan to attend as this is a great way to get involved with the Band. Our students and the Band Directors benefit greatly from the work that the Boosters do, and the more help that we have, the more that we can do. We have a lot of fun, and there are always a lot of ways to help. We will be having elections for board positions and committee chairs during our upcoming Band Extravaganza in May. If you are at all interested, attending a Booster meeting is a great way to get information on these positions. If you cannot attend, but are interested in helping out next year, please let me know and I will get you any information that you may need.

Tax Levy Presentation

The Ray-Pec Citzens for Children Committee will be having a presentation before our Booster meeting explaining the upcoming Tax Levy Proposal being voted on in April. The outcome of this levy could greatly affect all of our children and their education, and this is a great way to become informed on the facts. Please attend the presentation and bring any questions that you may have.

Thank you and we’ll hopefully see you on Monday.
